Many patients ask us this question — noticing a little bleeding when brushing or flossing can feel worrying. In most cases, though, the cause is straightforward and very treatable.

Is it normal for gums to bleed?

In short, no — healthy gums shouldn’t bleed regularly.

If you notice bleeding more than occasionally, your gums are likely inflamed, and that’s something worth addressing early.

What causes bleeding gums?

In most cases, plaque build-up along the gum line causes the problem.

When plaque isn’t get removed effectively, the bacteria within it irritate the gums. As a result, the gums can:

  • Become red
  • Feel slightly swollen
  • Bleed when brushed or cleaned between the teeth

This early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease that affects the supporting structures around the teeth. Over time, this can lead to loosening of teeth and, in more severe cases, tooth loss.

The good news

The good news is that gingivitis is reversible — and by addressing it early, you can prevent it from progressing further.

With the right care and support, you can return your gums to full health relatively quickly.

What should I do if my gums are bleeding?

Although it may feel counterintuitive, the solution is to clean the area more effectively — not less.

You should:

  • Brush twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth using floss or interdental brushes
  • Take a little extra care around the gum line

If bleeding continues, we recommend booking a hygiene appointment so we can remove hardened deposits and help you improve your technique.

A quick reassurance

You’re not doing anything unusual, we see this every day.

Most patients who experience bleeding gums simply need a small adjustment to their routine and a little professional support. Once addressed, things usually improve quickly.

When should I get it checked?

We recommend arranging an appointment if you notice:

  • Bleeding that continues for more than a week or two
  • Ongoing swelling or tenderness
  • A persistent bad taste

If you’re unsure, it’s always best to have things checked early.
